1. The bubble show (the theatrical option)

Child standing inside a giant pink-purple translucent bubble on a stage with dramatic lighting

A professional bubble artist — a "bubbleologist" — runs a 30 to 60 minute performance. Square bubbles, smoke bubbles, bubble caterpillars, bubble fountains, and the unmissable grand finale: the birthday child stands inside a single giant bubble taller than they are.

It's a show first, participation second — kids sit and watch, then get called up in turns. Comedy is usually built in. Many performers also offer audience interaction stations after the main show so kids can try giant wands themselves.

Suits

Ages 3 to 10. Larger groups (15–40 kids). Indoor or outdoor.

UK price

£180–£300 budget, £300–£450 mid, £450–£830+ premium for 1 hour.

US price

$150–$300 budget, $300–$750 mid, $750–$7,500 premium for 1 hour.

What's usually included: performer, all equipment, bubble solution, setup and pack-down, the "kid in a bubble" finale. Travel may be extra.

2. Bubble machine + DIY (the affordable workhorse)

A bubble machine on a table producing a dense stream of bubbles in a garden

Two or three high-output bubble machines plus a few DIY stations with wands and bubble solution. No performer — just bubbles, music, and movement.

This is what most home parties actually are. It's also the option most underrated. Get two strong machines (a Zerhunt or Gazillion Tornado puts out 10,000+ bubbles a minute), put them at opposite ends of the play space pointing slightly upward and inward, and you've created a moving cloud kids can run through for an hour straight.

Suits

Any age. Smaller groups (5–20). Mostly outdoor (indoor with floor protection).

Kit cost

£40–£100 for the gear; £100 covers a full party kit for ~10 kids.

Effort

You're the host. ~2 hours of prep, 90 min of running it.

3. Walk-in bubble / giant bubbles

Adult silhouette making a giant elongated bubble in a garden at golden hour

The "Instagram moment" of bubble parties — a person stands inside a human-sized bubble, or a wand creates a 3-metre bubble snake floating across the lawn.

As a standalone service it's rare. It's almost always bundled into a bubble show as the finale, or sold as a 30-minute photo-op add-on at events. As a DIY activity it absolutely works — a £40 human-bubble kit with a tray and large hoop produces real magic if you've got a calm day.

Suits

Any age, but the wow is highest for 4–9. Outdoor only (wind permitting).

DIY cost

£40–£150 for a walk-in kit. Bubble solution is the consumable.

Pro add-on

$100–$200 add-on in the US. UK shows typically bundle it free.

4. Foam party (foam pit / foam cannon)

Mountain of white foam with children's hands reaching up out of it under blue sky

A different beast. A foam cannon (powered by water and a non-toxic foam concentrate) fills a designated area with a metre-deep mountain of thick foam. Kids jump, run, build "foam castles", have foam battles.

This is full-body, high-energy, and properly messy. You'll need swimwear or change of clothes for every kid. It's also the option with the most safety to manage: eye protection (foam stings if you get a faceful), non-slip footwear or barefoot, and good ventilation if indoors.

Suits

Ages 4 to 12. Outdoor strongly preferred. Larger groups thrive in it.

UK price

£210 for 1-hour budget, £475 for 3-hour mid, £650–£950 for large pro packages.

US price

$325–$399 budget, $595–$893 deluxe (with foam pit, speaker, 2–3 hours of foam).

5. Bubble + character combo

A costumed character (princess, superhero, popular cartoon character) runs a bubble-themed dance party. Less bubble artistry, more interactive entertainment with bubbles as the thematic glue. Kids interact directly with the character, dance, play games, take photos.

This is the sweet spot for 3–6 year olds who are deeply invested in one specific character. If the birthday child has a current obsession, this is the format. If they don't, skip it for a straight bubble show.

Suits

Ages 3–6. Smaller, more intimate groups (8–15 kids).

Price

Similar to bubble shows; character licensing may add a premium.

Quick decision matrix

If you don't want to read all of that:

  • Toddler (1–3)? → Machine + DIY. Or a 30-minute bubble show. Skip foam.
  • Preschool (3–5)? → Machine + DIY for budget; bubble show or character combo for the wow.
  • Early elementary (5–8)? → Bubble show with walk-in finale, OR a small foam party.
  • 8–12? → Foam party. The bigger the better.
  • Mixed-age siblings party? → Bubble show is the safest "everyone enjoys it" pick.
